Roman Theatre

The Roman Theater of Malaga is one of the living symbols of the Roman Hispania in the city. It has a modern interpretation center located next to it where, through new technologies, you can get to know the life and customs of the time. It has also recovered its original use by offering shows inside.

Discovered in 1951 it was for many years, semi-hidden by the building of the so-called House of Culture, built between 1940-42 and retouched in the sixties, where the first indications of the Theater were discovered, which was definitely demolished to be able to properly assess this theater within the plans of the 1992 cultural programs.

In the excavations the proescenium was exposed, that is the stage, remains of the Orchestra, the place reserved for senators and the cavea, the grandstand of 31 meters of radius by 16 high with thirteen steps and the entrances to the Bleachers, the so-called vomitorium.

Built in the time of Augustus, in the first century after Christ, it remained in use until the third century. Numerous materials such as ashlars, columns and carved stones were used for the construction of the Alcazaba.

The interpretation center that is decorated on the outside by fragments of the Lex Flavia Malacitana, contains original pieces recovered in the excavations.
